Best Things to Do with Kids in San Miguel de Allende

Planning a family trip and wondering about the best things to do with kids in San Miguel de Allende?

This charming colonial city is one of the most family-friendly destinations in Mexico — not because of big attractions, but because of how easy and welcoming everyday life feels here. Kids are part of everything, from lively plazas and street food stalls to markets, parks, and local traditions.

Having grown up in San Miguel and now returning each year with my own children, I’ve experienced it both as a local and as a visitor. In this guide, I’m sharing the best family activities in San Miguel de Allende — from must-do experiences to the simple moments that end up meaning the most.

Why San Miguel de Allende Is Perfect for Families

Before diving into the activities, it helps to understand why San Miguel works so well for families.

Unlike large cities packed with attractions, San Miguel offers something different — a slower rhythm where daily life itself becomes the adventure.

Kids can:

  • Run around the main plaza

  • Catch a parade or procession — there’s almost always something to celebrate in San Miguel!

  • Explore colorful markets

  • Take cooking classes

  • Ride horses through the countryside

  • Discover unique swimming spots around the city

  • Try new foods and flavors they may have never experienced before

It’s a destination where culture, food, art, and outdoor life naturally mix together, creating meaningful travel experiences for the whole family.

1. Let the Kids Run Free in El Jardín

Every day in San Miguel starts in El Jardín, the city’s beautiful central plaza.

This pedestrian-only square sits in front of the iconic pink church, La Parroquia — which, to kids, feels like a giant castle rising above the trees. The bells toll every hour, and if you look closely, you can sometimes spot the bell ringer high up at the top. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a wedding or a quinceañera just as they step out of the church — a moment that feels so uniquely San Miguel.

It’s truly the heart of daily life in the city.

Kids love it because:

  • Vendors sell giant “rocket balloons,” along with souvenirs, bracelets, and little treasures

  • Mariachi bands perform on weekends, filling the plaza with music

  • Street snacks like corn, fresh fruit, and ice cream are everywhere

There’s plenty of space to run, play, and just be kids. Our kids can easily spend an hour here launching balloons into the air and watching them spin across the plaza.

It’s simple, but somehow magical.

2. Visit Museo La Esquina (The Toy Museum)

One of the best cultural activities for kids in San Miguel is Museo La Esquina, a charming museum dedicated to traditional Mexican toys.

Inside you’ll find colorful displays of:

  • hand-carved wooden toys

  • puppets

  • spinning tops

  • vintage dolls

  • folk art figures

The real highlight for families is the hands-on workshops, where kids can create crafts like:

  • piñatas

  • masks

  • sugar skulls

  • traditional toys

It’s creative, educational, and surprisingly fun for adults too.

3. Take a Family Cooking Class

Food is a huge part of Mexican culture, and cooking classes are one of the best ways for kids to experience it.

Some family classes include:

  • visiting a local market

  • learning how to make tortillas

  • preparing traditional dishes like enchiladas or tamales

  • cooking in traditional clay pots

Kids love getting their hands messy with dough and salsa — and they leave proud of the meal they helped create.

4. Explore Fábrica La Aurora (Art Factory)

Once a textile factory, Fábrica La Aurora is now an art and design center filled with galleries and studios.

Even kids enjoy exploring here because there’s always something unexpected:

  • giant sculptures

  • colorful modern art

  • old factory machines

  • working artist studios

After wandering the galleries, families often stop at Geek & Coffee, a café with a large garden where kids can run around while parents relax with coffee.

5. Visit the Colorful Local Markets

Exploring the markets is one of the most exciting things for kids to do in San Miguel.

The main markets are:

Mercado Ignacio Ramírez

A bustling local market with fruit, food stalls, spices, and handmade goods.

Connected to the main market, this area sells crafts like:

  • embroidered dresses

  • handmade toys

  • pottery

  • jewelry

  • Mexican candy

One of my favorite traditions with my daughter is giving her 200 pesos to spend, letting her practice Spanish and choose a small souvenir herself.

It turns shopping into a cultural experience.

6. Spend a Day at the Hot Springs (La Gruta)

Just outside the city are natural hot springs, and La Gruta is the most famous.

The pools are warm and relaxing, but the real highlight is a tunnel that leads to a steamy cave pool. Kids think it’s like entering a secret world.

La Gruta has:

  • shallow pools for younger kids

  • restaurants and snacks

  • lots of space to relax

Tip: arrive early before the crowds.

7. Cool Off at Xote Water Park

For a classic family day, Xote Water Park is a favorite with local families.

It’s not fancy, but kids love it.

Expect:

  • water slides

  • splash zones

  • swimming pools

  • picnic areas

And it’s surprisingly affordable compared to water parks in the U.S.

8. Ride Horses Through the Countryside

If your kids love animals, horseback riding is a must.

Local ranch tours, like Coyote Canyon Adventures, take families through:

  • desert landscapes

  • canyons

  • countryside trails

Even beginners can ride, and younger kids often get their own horse with a guide. It’s one of the most memorable experiences in the region.

9. Spend Time in Parque Juárez

When kids need a break from sightseeing, Parque Juárez is the best park in the city.

It has:

  • a playground

  • a basketball court

  • fountains

  • shady paths

  • open space for running

Local families gather here in the afternoons, and it’s a great place for kids to meet other children.

10. Eat Your Way Through the City

Let’s be honest — food is one of the best parts of visiting San Miguel.

Kids will love:

  • churros filled with chocolate

  • handmade ice cream

  • tacos al pastor

  • quesadillas

  • tarmarindo candy

  • corn with mayo, lime and chili

Street tacos are often the highlight of the trip.

Final Thoughts: Traveling to San Miguel with Kids

San Miguel de Allende isn’t a destination filled with theme parks or big attractions.

And honestly, that’s part of its magic.

The best moments often come from:

  • wandering the streets

  • discovering a hidden café

  • dancing to mariachi music in the plaza

  • eating tacos after bedtime

  • buying handmade keepsakes

It’s a place where travel slows down and families reconnect. And those are the kinds of memories kids carry forever.

If you’re planning a family trip, I hope this list helps you discover why so many families fall in love with San Miguel. Because once you experience it with your kids… you’ll probably be planning your return before the trip is even over.
